Huawei has overtaken Apple as the world’s second largest smartphone brand
According to a new report from market research firm Counterpoint, Huawei has surpassed Apple to become the second largest smartphone company in the world. The Chinese firm achieved the feat consistently for the month of June and July.
The Chinese firm achieved higher sales than Apple in the months of June and July and are expected to do the same for August too. They are China’s leading smartphone and have become popular due to their large displays and advanced camera functions.
They have a great presence in Asia, Europe and Latin America but a foothold in the South Asian, Indian, and North American markets, which “limits Huawei’s potential to the near-to-mid-term to take a sustainable second place position behind Samsung.”
Unfortunately for competing smartphone brands, Samsung has a presence in every market imaginable, it’s hard to compete if marketshare is the only thing you’re trying to compare. However, even though Samsung has the most marketshare, they do not have the most popular smartphone. The Counterpoint report also revealed that Apple would take home the trophy for the highest amount of sales with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, being frist and second, respectively. Oppo’s R11 and A57 came in third and fourth and Samsung’s Galaxy S8 which came out in April came in fifth. Other devices that made it to the list include the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X and Samsung Galaxy S8+.
“While Huawei climbed to be the world’s second largest brand overall, it is surprising to see none of its models breaking into the top ten rankings,” the report said.
“This is due to a multiple SKU portfolio that currently lacks a true hero device. While having a diverse portfolio allows Huawei to fight on multiple fronts, it does little to build overall brand recognition; something Huawei badly needs if it is continue to gain share.”
Adding to this, with the iPhone 8 set to release later this month, Apple are more than certain to get back on top, so, although Huawei are going towards the right direction, it seems that it will take something really serious that has worldwide recognition to ever compete on a long term basis.
