Charity 5-a-side Football Tournament

The third Procurement Heads 5-a-side Charity Football Tournament took place in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support last Friday which Cactus and 8 other teams played in and raised an incredible £850 for the charity.

We really enjoyed the day and it made it even better by winning the tournament in spectacular style.

We started off the day by winning all 3 games in our league (even with some questionable referring by Rupert from Procurement Heads) which then put us forward to the semi-finals. The first 3 games were thrilling and tiring as we only had 5 players and no substitutes but regardless, the team got stuck in and played some great football. Joe and Luke from Testlands Support Project linked up fantastically and scored a great deal of goals between them (including a last kick of the game powerdriver from Luke to win one of our games 7-6).

The semi-final was a bit less thrilling and ended in a low-scoring draw which only meant one thing – the dreaded penalties. At this point, I think most of the team admitted defeat but despite that, Cactus managed to come out on top after some great saves from our goalkeeper George.

This put us through to the final which left the thought of ‘thank god, it’s nearly over’ into everyone’s heads.

The end was near, and the pub was in sight.

The game started off badly for Cactus and we conceded 2 goals within about a minute. Nevertheless, the team created some brilliant bits off football and our Service Manager, Jamie netted 2 to bring the score back to 2-2. From here on, the game was tense and with about 3 minutes to go, a great ball was played up to our Charlie Austin in disguise (Luke) which was controlled and then hit against one of the opposition players and somehow, the ball found its way to the back off the net. We managed to see the game out with some exceptional defending from Lloyd (which was only a familiar story at this point because of how well he played in the rest of the tournament) and be crowned the Procurement Heads 5-a-side Football Tournament champions.

A big thank you to our players and manager:
  • Simon Gale (Gaffer) – Cactus Business Solutions
  • Jamie Pidgley (Skipper) – Cactus Business Solutions
  • Luke Newman (Charlie Austin) – Testlands Support Project
  • Joe Crook – Testlands Support Project
  • Lloyd Fitzgerald – Think Worldwide
  • George Marks

An even bigger thank you to Procurements Heads for putting on the great day and raising an incredible amount of money for a brilliant cause. You can read their post about the day here:
